Educational Assistance (EA) Program

The Educational Assistance (EA) Program provides tuition reimbursement for eligible Rutgers employees in legacy UMDNJ positions.  The program is offered in order to provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for each eligible employee to meet and exceed the requirements and expectations of his or her position and to support his or her personal and career development goals.

The Educational Assistance (EA) Program for legacy UMDNJ employees serves the following purposes: 

  • to create a strategic business tool that supports talent management as a critical human resources investment to attract and retain the best and brightest employees;
  • to integrate training and education as a vital part of total employee development;
  • to prepare for future talent needs and to understand the value of educational assistance in upcoming talent shortages;
  • to provide an educational planning resource for employees in legacy UMDNJ positions.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to participate in the Educational Assistance (EA) program, an employee must be in a legacy UMDNJ position and meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • The employee must have attained at least one (1) year of employment as a regular full or part-time employee;
  • Employees should work a minimum of 20 or more hours a week and should be in a active pay status (i.e., eligible to receive a paycheck). Temporary, Per Diem employees are not eligible;
  • The following titles are not eligible: student employees, post-graduate year (PGY) employees, post-doctoral fellows, fellows, faculty;
  • Employees must pass courses with an equivalent of a Grade "C" or better or "Pass" in a situation of a (pass/fail) grading system.

Course Work Eligible for Reimbursement 

The course of study must meet one of the criteria set forth below: 

  • The course must relate to an employee's current position, i.e., enhances the performance of current job;
  • The course must prepare a staff member for realistic career advancement within the University;
  • The course must be necessary to acquire or maintain professional licensure or certification.

Additionally the course of study should meet one of the following criteria: 

  • The course should be a core or elective requirement toward a degree;
  • The course should be a continuing education unit;
  • The course should be a special non-college course, a distance learning program, a seminar, a conference or a program sponsored by an accredited college, university or professional organization.
